beginnings
how I got started | I took my first photography class in high
school. In college I had the opportunity to study photography abroad. I
also worked for my school newspaper as the photo editor. Then I met a
well-known Santa Barbara wedding photographer. He taught me how to run a
successful wedding photography business and how to capture those
special moments. I started out working with another wedding
photographer. And I talked with other wedding photographers about how to
make contracts. And by word of mouth I started to get jobs. It's really
important to create a schedule with the bride and groom. If you create a
timeline it makes it easier to execute. I was lucky enough to learn
from others that had been in the business, but that's a common mistake.
inspiration
why this job?| Since I am a documentary photographer, it's
exciting to be a part of the most memorable day in people's lives and to
share that with them.
love
why I love this job!| The excitement, the creativity, the people, the energy, the moments.
work
my typical day| It starts the night before. I make a list of
things I need and check all the equipment and make sure everything is
charged and ready to go. It's good to talk to the couple the night
before too. In the morning make sure you have everything and show up
early. Check out the location and the lighting, just get prepared. Also,
introduce yourself to pertinent people like the wedding planner, the
priest, the venue representative and family. I photograph the bride and
groom getting ready and the wedding party. I photograph people as they
arrive to the ceremony. I photograph the ceremony and it is important to
photograph the key moments and the details as well. I usually do family
and friends portraits after ward. Then I try to photograph the bride
and groom at a unique location. Then at the reception try to photograph
the details, like the cake, flowers, cards etc. Then I get to all the
picture perfect moments toast, first dances and cake cutting etc. I try
to do fun portraits with the friends and family, like dancing pictures.
The last thing is to photograph the grand exit.
challenges
what they are | It's expensive to get started because you not
only have to get the equipment; you have to advertise as well. Another
challenge is Bridezillas, it's a stressful time and it's important to
stay calm. It's also difficult to photograph everyone. Try your best to
photograph the most important people. When in doubt, take pictures of
everyone. Also, make sure to have a balance of creative and straight
images.
upside
all about growth | People are always going to get married so
there will always be a demand. With more experience there is higher end
cliental, which means more money and more work.
