HOW TO GET STARTED | I would highly recommend the insurance industry because it is mandated by New York State that you need insurance to own a vehicle and drive. The hours are flexible and are usually Monday through Friday until 4:30 p.m. I offer weekends and evenings by appointment only. If you are interested in the field, you need to enroll for the 80 hour instruction classes at Bryant and Stratton in Albany, New York and it usually costs about 0 for the class instruction and about to take the state exam. Most agencies in the capital district require you to be licensed. In New York State, in order to sell or solicit insurance, you must have Property & Casualty license.
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Personality, friendly, upbeat, positive, multi-task oriented, and not afraid to talk to people. You should be able to feel comfortable with talking with people on the phone and be able to explain information in detail. If you are a multi-tasker this is a huge plus in this industry. You choose your attitude everyday you come to work. From the time you hit the door to the time you leave you put on your happy face!

my typical day| A typical day in the office would be answering phone calls all day long, explaining insurance, quoting new business, selling new business, handling claims, billing, and handling all the needs of our clients.

challenges
what they are | You have to take each day as it comes. Every day is a new day in insurance. Be pleasant and helpful, no matter how nice or rude the person is on the phone. You have to treat everyone the same with excellent, friendly service. Take a deep breath and be patient if you have an irate client. You have to listen to what they have to say.

upside
all about growth | The growth potential is the capability of owning your own agency one day. I plan on purchasing the Matador agency. Usually you start out as a licensed CSR, customer service representative, and then you get your license and you are then able to get commissions on policies that you sell if your employer offers that. You will grow your income being licensed.
