Title: Owner of a Nanny agency
Profession: Business Owner
I run a nanny placement agency. I work with families struggling to find flexible, quality childcare in their home.
EDUCATION | Bachelors in Business
HOW TO GET STARTED | Do some research, hire someone in the industry as a consultant. There's no need to reinvent the wheel
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Patience. You have to like working with families. You have to be outgoing, able to approach people, because people usually choose their childcare providers based on word of mouth.
beginnings
how I got started | I had my own summer childcare need. At the time I had a corporate job with a local performance marketing company, and I needed help with my kids over the summer. I did some research on what my options were, and found a summer nanny. Having a nanny allowed my children to stay home, play outside in their own neighborhood, and participate in activities. My friends asked me how I found my nanny, and my nanny's friends asked her how she found me. It just seemed like a natural choice for me to start my own nanny agency.

inspiration
why this job?| Helping children find the best childcare when mom and dad have somewhere else they need to be. We're picky about our nannies- they have to be outstanding. We recruit through word of mouth, at the community colleges and universities, and at the local high schools. Our nannies need to have completed high school, but our recruitment efforts at the high school level is directed toward encouraging students to consider this as a future summer job or even career choice. And yes, we have male nannies- our clients call them "mannies."

love
why I love this job!| I get to help families. I help them find the balance between work and life. And, I get to find the nannies great families to work with.

work
my typical day| Besides running the nanny agency, I'm a mom, so I'm up early, getting the kids ready for their day. I'm at the computer by 6:30AM. It's a long day, developing ideas, making contacts, meeting with families, and growing my business. Also, I volunteer with the public school system and serve on the board of NAWBO, the National Association of Women Business Owners.

challenges
what they are | Lack of sleep- there's always something to do!

upside
all about growth | There's a demand for this service. Especially with this economy, people are shifting, moving, and they look to nanny agencies for the security of knowing their kids are well taken care of, so they can focus on work.
