beginnings
how I got started | Skincare and make-up had already been my
passion for years. I started out freelancing as a make-up artist. Then I
got hooked into selling various brands of make-up at the mall. To be
honest, I wasn't feeling great about the products I was supposed to
offer people. Personally, I felt I needed to believe in what I was
selling and I didn't. I even started sending customers to check out
different cosmetic lines! I was not a great sales woman! When a friend
suggested I get my aesthetician's license, I quit my job and started
school. Before I had even finished my training, I had a job waiting for
me at a salon. I worked there for one year before following my plans to
go out on my own. From there I rented my own studio and became a
business owner.
inspiration
why this job?| Skincare is my passion. I feel so fortunate that I
found my passion and I make money at it. And being a business owner has
given me flexibility for my family.
love
why I love this job!| There are so many reasons! I'm such a
people person and this job is such a perfect fit. I love creating a
wonderful atmosphere for my clients - soft music, candle light, peace
and quiet - while I care for their skin needs. Women come in everyday
and tell me that I am the best part of their day! I get to be creative,
too, and it's never boring - each client has different needs.
work
my typical day| I'm up around 7:00 a.m. and sometimes I work out
in the morning. If I have a 9:30 a.m. appointment scheduled, for
example, I arrive at the studio around 9:00 a.m. I then set up and go
right into seeing clients. I can do about 30 skincare treatments a day
because all I really do at the studio is see clients. I give 100% to
each person during their appointment. It's an eight to 10 hour day for
me, four days a week. On my "day off" is when I work on the business
side of things. My husband is a huge support to me on all levels and
even helps out with the paperwork for the business. I do have an
assistant at the studio who places orders, etc., but I am the only one
giving treatments.
challenges
what they are | Biggest challenge: Staying on time. I'm booked
sometimes every 15 minutes with clients. When they're late, it can throw
my whole schedule off. It's important to me that I stay on time and be
respectful of other's time.
upside
all about growth | There are lots of different avenues for you
once you get your license. Besides giving facials and waxing, for
example, you can be a make-up artist, a representative of a skincare
line, get involved with outside sales, train others, etc. There is so
much room for growth in this business. My goal at this point is to have a
staff working under me.
