Gina Barron
Title: Owner of Rituals Aesthetic Skincare
Profession: Business Owner
I look after my clients' needs by providing skincare services - facials, anti-aging, waxing and skincare regimes and products.
EDUCATION | I received my skincare license (aesthetics) after completing a one-year program offered at a local junior college. I've also taken some business classes.
HOW TO GET STARTED | Go through a one-year aesthetics program and get your license. Then, typically, you would work under someone at a salon and function as an apprentice. You may start at the front desk and then begin to see your own clients. If you plan on starting your own aesthetics business after working at a salon, be sure and build your clientele first. Take care of yourself. This is a phenomenal industry, but you're giving all the time so take time for yourself. My stress level is low because I compartmentalize the business end of things and my client time.
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Be a nurturer and a good listener. You will have to be "on" everyday, so a positive attitude is so important. You also need to be meticulous.
beginnings
how I got started | Skincare and make-up had already been my passion for years. I started out freelancing as a make-up artist. Then I got hooked into selling various brands of make-up at the mall. To be honest, I wasn't feeling great about the products I was supposed to offer people. Personally, I felt I needed to believe in what I was selling and I didn't. I even started sending customers to check out different cosmetic lines! I was not a great sales woman! When a friend suggested I get my aesthetician's license, I quit my job and started school. Before I had even finished my training, I had a job waiting for me at a salon. I worked there for one year before following my plans to go out on my own. From there I rented my own studio and became a business owner.

inspiration
why this job?| Skincare is my passion. I feel so fortunate that I found my passion and I make money at it. And being a business owner has given me flexibility for my family.

love
why I love this job!| There are so many reasons! I'm such a people person and this job is such a perfect fit. I love creating a wonderful atmosphere for my clients - soft music, candle light, peace and quiet - while I care for their skin needs. Women come in everyday and tell me that I am the best part of their day! I get to be creative, too, and it's never boring - each client has different needs.

work
my typical day| I'm up around 7:00 a.m. and sometimes I work out in the morning. If I have a 9:30 a.m. appointment scheduled, for example, I arrive at the studio around 9:00 a.m. I then set up and go right into seeing clients. I can do about 30 skincare treatments a day because all I really do at the studio is see clients. I give 100% to each person during their appointment. It's an eight to 10 hour day for me, four days a week. On my "day off" is when I work on the business side of things. My husband is a huge support to me on all levels and even helps out with the paperwork for the business. I do have an assistant at the studio who places orders, etc., but I am the only one giving treatments.

challenges
what they are | Biggest challenge: Staying on time. I'm booked sometimes every 15 minutes with clients. When they're late, it can throw my whole schedule off. It's important to me that I stay on time and be respectful of other's time.

upside
all about growth | There are lots of different avenues for you once you get your license. Besides giving facials and waxing, for example, you can be a make-up artist, a representative of a skincare line, get involved with outside sales, train others, etc. There is so much room for growth in this business. My goal at this point is to have a staff working under me.
