beginnings
how I got started | When I got married, I made my own wedding
album. If you have a professional photographer do it for you, it can be
quite expensive, so I found a photographer who gave me all my wedding
photos on a disk, and I took it from there. After I had my babies-
quadruplets!- I wanted to do something with all their pictures. I
started out by making traditional scrapbooks, but by the time I got all
the papers and embellishments out and ready to go, one or more of the
babies would need my attention. So I pulled out my laptop and found a
digital scrapbook site. I learned how to make the scrapbooks digitally,
and make a scrapbook of my girls' first six months. I was able to give
copies to all our family, plus make one for each of the girls for when
they are older.
At that time, I was working for a major hotel company, and I frequently
went on business trips. When people heard I had quadruplets, they always
wanted to see pictures, so I would bring out the digital scrapbooks.
They thought that was really origional, and would often ask me if I
could make one for them. So I started out doing this on the side as a
part-time venture. In late 2008 I got laid off, and started doing this
full-time. Since then, I've been inundated with opportunities.
inspiration
why this job?| This job allows me to do something I love to do:
to use my creativity and to connect with people in a personal way. Right
now, I'm making a photobook for a woman whose uncle died, that is
something she can share with her family and honor his memory. I'm
touched that I get to be a part of that. I'm glad that I can help people
put together something meaningful that they wouldn't have otherwise.
Plus, I like havng the time with my family and being my own boss.
love
why I love this job!| Creativity; connecting with people on an emotional level; celebrating the special moments in people's lives.
work
my typical day| I get up early and feed the girls and get them
ready for the day. The manny (man nanny) comes at 9:30, and then I work
on various projects, like creating books for people and attending Ladies
Who Launch, a group that is helping me learn how to manage my small
business. The nanny leaves at 3:30, and I take over with the kids,
spending time with them and my husband until the kids go to bed. Then I
usually work for a couple hours, updating my website or working on
projects for clients.
challenges
what they are | Finding enough time is a challenge. That, and
controlling my brain- I want to do so much! I have to decide how to
funnel my energy into one thing at a time so I stay the course.
upside
all about growth | There are very few people who have the same
business I do. It's kind of an untapped market. In time, I hope to
create my own software to teach people how to do my job and give other
mothers an opportunity to work for themselves.
