Randi Smith-Todorowski
Title: Co-Creator Atlas Martial Arts
Profession: Business Owner
I refer to myself as an empowerment expert. I teach kung fu and tai chi, but more importantly, I help my students get back in touch with themselves. Previously, I ran a sales organization and trained in kung fu in my free time to help me find my personal balance. I realized that I was really passionate about personal development. I decided instead of training people how to make money, I'd train them to reach their greatest potential.

beginnings
how I got started | I think secretly we all want to be a Black Belt. I translate that into reaching your potential- when you do that in any area, you're a black belt. When I was a kung fu student, I noticed how the school could be run better as a business. I gave them my suggestions and brought in more students. Soon, I decided I could just start my own business and put those skills to use for myself. My partner and I wanted to use positive reinforcement and empower students, not break them down.

inspiration
why this job?| I love helping people feel comfortable in their own skin. There is so much focus today on outer beauty- I'm passionate about helping people feel better from the inside out. The potential is boudless. One day you are enrolling a white belt and then you are creating an Instructor.

love
why I love this job!| It's rewarding to watch people's transformation, to see the light come on in people's eyes- to see that fire come back. I love that I get to be who I am- I don't have to put on a mask or play a role. I love the flexibility of my job- this week I spent one day working with corporate executives and another day working with the Girl Scouts; another day, I might be giving lessons to a child with autism. I grow every day, and my reach grows as well.

work
my typical day| I wake up when I wake up and start the day by journaling. I have coffee with my husband. I take care of my e-mails and look for new opportunities. I do an hour and a half of hot yoga, shower and go to my school, Atlas Martial Arts. There I consult with Affiliates and teach Instructors. I teach private lessons and group classes. We have an online academy, so I may be filming for that. I go home about 7:30 and eat dinner with my husband.

challenges
what they are | Getting people to realize kung fu is for everybody- eliminating excuses and getting them to try it for the first time. Today there's a big emphasis on mixed martial arts, which can get people confused- kung fu is a totally different thing, a much more traditional martial art. It is great for stress reduction, health and wellness. You don't need to be a Black Belt to teach others.

upside
all about growth | The potential is huge. The overhead for this business is low. You can start in your garage or the park. Remember everyone secretly wants to be a Black Belt. You are just learning to teach skills as you are learning them yourself. Make it fun and you will have a huge following! Create a Revolution in your Neighborhood. Use the ancient ways to create modern warriors.
