Profession: Graphic Arts/Illustration
In my position I coordinate with editors, writers, Photo and Art departments regarding the production of the magazine from start to finish. I work with hourly and daily deadlines in a fast-paced work environment styling text, using and creating style sheets, as well as scanning, fitting and modifying images for page layout. I also maintain a database to track and record work flow and page elements. The final stages of my production work have involved working regularly with file compression programs and sending finalized files via FTP and other digital transfer servers such as Mass Transit. I also routinely work with archived final layouts for various company projects.
EDUCATION | BA in Political Science from DePaul University.
HOW TO GET STARTED | I highly recommend investing in software such as Adobe Creative Suite when learning the tools of the trade, plus learn the basics of Web design. Become a member of an organization that focuses on the industry.

beginnings
how I got started | I worked on the business-side in publishing and was interested in moving to the editorial, so I networked until I made it happen. Starting out as an assistant I worked my way up by learning the skills and tools of the trade, while at the same time learning as much as I could about the industry.

inspiration
why this job?| I have been a big fan of magazines and various forms of print media since I was a little girl. I wanted to be part of an industry that embraces creativity, and publishing definitely does that on many levels.

why I love this job!| I love the creativity, the people, and seeing the finished product in print or online after weeks of putting the product together.

work
my typical day| A typical day would begin by checking the status of each of the stories we are working on. Is the text in? Has the layout been finalized? I work with editors and designers to finalize stories and art. When everything is approved, the completed pages are shipped to the printer and/or Web producer and the final product begins to fall into place.
