Heidi Neck
Title: Jeffry A. Timmons Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies
Profession: Professor
I teach entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship at the undergraduate, graduate, executive, and educator level. I conduct research on social entrepreneurship activity and the impact of entrepreneurship education.
EDUCATION | Ph.D. in Business Administration with an emphasis in strategy and entrepreneurship from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Also have an MBA from Colorado as well. Undergraduate degree is in Marketing from Louisiana State University.
HOW TO GET STARTED | Choosing a school is a personal decision and if you can't go to one of the top 5 schools in the world then go where you have the best fit - regardless of reputation or ranking. Before pursuing a doctorate degree, however, talk with as many Ph.D.'s as possible to get a flavor for the real life of an academic. The perception of an academic life is not always the reality.
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Inquisitive, analytical yet creative, self-motivated, and strong presentation skills a must.
beginnings
how I got started | As a little girl my two favorite "games" to play were teacher and banker. Go figure that I would become a business school professor. My interest in social entrepreneurship emerged when I didn't see a passion for activism among business school students - at least the level of activism that you see in other areas of universities. Today business school students are really rallying around the social issues. They see business opportunities that can contribute to the solution of social problems. Business students today are developing a greater understanding of their role in and responsibility to the world.

inspiration
why this job?| I think when you find a perfect fit with something it chooses you.

love
why I love this job!| The students, the creativity, and the flexibility.

work
my typical day| Teach a class, take notes on areas of improvement for next time, meet with students, attend other college-related meetings, check email, check email again (!), solve problems. Not one day as a professor is the same. Some days I'll be writing, others teaching. Maybe I'll be presenting a paper at a conference or grappling with a new research idea behind closed doors. I could be teaching an executive education program or spending a week in Russia educating other educators on ways of teaching entrepreneurship. My job allows me to think, create, connect, perform (as on stage!), build, and learn - all on a daily basis.

challenges
what they are | The challenge is when to say no. There are so many interesting and diverse opportunities in the academic world, but focus is important to building an area of expertise.

upside
all about growth | There is an expected shortage of ph.d' s in business so demand for business professors is high and will likely remain so. The opportunities for growth are limitless. One can take an administrative route and aspire to be a dean or even president of a university. One may choose to advance on the traditional academic ladder from assistant to associate to full professor where you are an "academic entrepreneur" and create your own path!
