Jo A. Della Penna
Title: Business Coach
Profession: Coach
I work with entrepreneurs who want to take their business from being a challenging job to a profitable streamlined business that serves their life, not consumes it.
EDUCATION | Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration, University of Phoenix
HOW TO GET STARTED | Understand that when you're authentically who you are and bringing that to whatever you're doing, there is no competition. Use others as a model but don't compare yourself to them or try to emulate them. You have to be who you are. Surround yourself by the people who will help you grow, evolve, challenge and stretch because it's the only way you're going to move forward and succeed.
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Compassion, understanding other people and how they work, the ability to see the big picture and then systematically plan and break that down to guide your daily life, understanding yourself well enough to communicate with others, discipline.
beginnings
how I got started | I've always known I wanted to be an entrepreneur and have my own business. A career in coaching came about while I was finding out what I was good at (accounting and financial management) and then from there discovering what I love - working with entrepreneurs and helping them achieve their dreams.

inspiration
why this job?| The opportunity to have a larger impact in helping people change their lives for the better, really becoming who they are and less about what they do.

love
why I love this job!| (1) Getting to touch people's lives (2) The fact that there is no ceiling on opportunity. (3) What I do helps me to be myself and be a better person. I get to make a living at being me.

work
my typical day| I don't have a typical day but my week always includes two full days of scheduled client calls. The rest is filled in with business networking and lots of public speaking engagements. Evenings and weekends are family time. I love that my business works around my life.

challenges
what they are | The biggest challenge is just staying on task. As is the case with any entrepreneur, it's easy to get off course. Another challenge is working with a variety of different people. You have to be able to adjust. My approach fluctuates with every client because they're all different. You have to get out of your own way to let the process serve the person. Another challenge is communicating the niche that my business falls into. There are a lot of coaches, life coaches, and business coaches out there. You need to communicate who you are and what you do. There are a lot of specific challenges in reaching the right market and communicating that message.

upside
all about growth | You can design this career any way you choose. There is a lot of potential because with coaching you can also do workshops, training, retreats, and public speaking. There is a lot of diversity within this profession. You don't have to just do one-on-one coaching. The opportunity is great and the demand is high. There are a lot of entrepreneurs out there who don't know what they don't know so they're seeking that guidance. People are willing to spend money to help their business grow but in turn they also get the benefit of watching themselves grow and be successful.
