beginnings
how I got started | The inspiration for Generate Change came to
me in the summer of 2006, after hearing about an organization called
"Look Good, Feel Better." This organization travels around the country,
providing makeovers for women with cancer, helping them on their road to
recovery. During that same period, I realized that while I don't have
much, I'd be happy to donate my small change to such organizations, but
found no easy, efficient, method to do so.
inspiration
why this job?| I thought about how companies today want to become
more socially responsible at less cost to them. I pulled these ideas
together, and thought, what if consumers at salons and make-up counters
could round up their total, donating their change to Look Good Feel
Better? I expanded this idea--what if consumers at The Home Depot could,
literally, generate change for Habitat for Humanity, or customers at
Eastern Mountain Sports could generate change for the Appalachian
Mountain Club? Generate Change was born.
love
why I love this job!| I help thousands of individuals and
hundreds of companies around Boston engage in the community through
volunteer events, donation drives, and connecting with each other
through civic engagement activities. I work for an incredible
organization where data analysis, collaborative relationships, and
innovation drives strategy, culture, and impact in the community.
work
my typical day| No day is typical for me, my days have a lot of variety.
challenges
what they are | There is no 'on' or 'off' the clock, no 'at the
office or on vacation,' no 'leaving work at work.' For entrepreneurs, as
our lives become our work, we must learn to let go of some control, to
loosen the grip. For me personally, this obstacle comes up time and time
again. It came up after hiring my first employee, as I learned to
acknowledge that I must hand off certain aspects of my work and trust
that others will work hard and produce results.
upside
all about growth | It is an enterprising job, so its up to you on where you can take it.
