Lee Miller
Title: Managing Director NegotiationPlus.com (Trainer, Speaker, Author)
Profession: Training
I am a trainer, speaker and author. Everything I do is around the subject matter of how to influence others. I love it.
EDUCATION | BA from Rutgers University and graduated from Harvard Law School.
HOW TO GET STARTED | If you want to be a trainer/speaker, develop an area of expertise. Know your subject matter and be a good presenter. Learn how to promote and market yourself.
MUST HAVE TRAITS | You've got to like people and be outgoing. You have to be, or be willing to learn how to be, a good speaker. I never thought of myself as being either a good speaker or a good marketer, but these are skills that can be learned.
beginnings
how I got started | I was the senior vice president of human resources at TV Guide when the company went through a merger. I decided to leave, and really only intended to take a short "time-out" from the corporate world to work on a book with my daughter. We wrote "A Woman's Guide to Successful Negotiating," and it was a huge success. Through that, I received a lot of speaking engagements and opportunities to train others. I never went back to the corporate world.

inspiration
why this job?| I feel good about impacting people's lives in a very positive way by teaching them how to influence others and successfully negotiate for what they need.

love
why I love this job!| I love helping people. Plus, I travel all around the world and meet alot of interesting people. And, I make good money doing what I love.

work
my typical day| There is no typical day. If I'm training, I may be traveling to a speaking engagement, meeting, doing my presentation, going to dinner with a client. If I'm writing, I may be working on a book or writing my career column for the New Jersey Star Ledger. I may be coaching an individual client, or teaching a class: I'm an adjunct professor at Columbia University. Or i may be promoting my latest book Get More Money on Your Next Job...In Any Economy

challenges
what they are | Marketing is a challenge. Like with many other businesses, if you're successful, you spawn copycat competitors so you have to work to stay one step ahead of the pack. You have to continually develop new ways to get your message out there.

upside
all about growth | In the long term, there will be a high demand for this kind of work
