beginnings
how I got started | I knew I wanted to do something with media
but I didn't know what exactly. In college, I landed an internship in
the Sales/Marketing department at KPIX (CBS Bay Area). After graduating,
my professor referred me for the Assistant Broadcast Negotiator at a
media agency specializing in media buying where they liked my experience
in the advertising side at the TV station. I tried it out and ended up
enjoying the work I did.
inspiration
why this job?| I chose planning and buying because while I knew I
wanted to do something with media, I was also interested in Business.
My major was actually emphasized in "Business Aspects." In my job, I
have to do negotiations with people and clients and work with budgets. I
have to maintain professional relationships with sales representatives;
it is all very business-like.
love
why I love this job!| One of the main things I like is that it is
a very social job. I work with a lot of sales reps and I meet a lot of
people. These are the people who want my business. They treat me nicely
and it is a huge perk. Also, the work that I do, I see it as a big
puzzle where I need to make sure all the pieces fit and make sense.
There are so many choices on how to advertise and where to advertise. It
is my job to figure out what is the best way to spend that money, who
to target efficiently to, and where to place that ad to receive the
biggest return on investment. I am fascinated by the methods and
abilities to get messages across people and how messages can be
manipulated and catered to your liking.
work
my typical day| I come in and be a part of the daily morning
meeting to discuss each person's task at hand. We all hold different
parts of getting a client's ad done. After the meetings, I get into
tracking ad campaigns that I have already planned to make sure that
everything I ordered and placed is running smoothly and correctly. Then I
get into planning for the upcoming months by seeing what has worked in
the past and how to improve my next campaign. My workload depends by the
seasons; there are times when I am heavy in maintenance and wrapping up
of campaigns and then there are also times where I am busy in
pre-planning for the upcoming campaigns. I usually end my day at around
6-6:30P.M with occasional late night sessions.
challenges
what they are | I love that I am a part of a small agency, but
since this is a newer agency that is starting out, I am lacking the
necessary tools to do my job efficiently. I do the best that I can, but
it can definitely be better. From my previous job at one of the biggest
media agencies, I used a software specifically designed to help me
create and research my media orders. Now, I lack the software and any in
depth research data I need; I have to outsource for the data instead of
finding it myself.
upside
all about growth | In my current position and place, I see the
agency growing. It is a small agency with a growing client base. I am a
part of a two person department where the work is getting heavier.
Luckily, I am part of a company that exercises promoting within and if
there was an expansion of my department, I would be the first in line to
help lead it.
