beginnings
how I got started | When I was in engineering school we had to
take classes outside of our major. I chose to take some kinesiology
classes and sports sociology classes. Also, as a part time job I worked
with for the campus recreation department. I would hire and train group
fitness instructors and teach group fitness classes for the program. I
always worked in health clubs as a part time job regardless of where my
engineering job would take me. In the back of my mind, I always wanted
to go into the health and fitness industry, so I went back to school for
my Masters degree in Kinesiology. After going to school part-time for a
couple semesters, I decided this is what I want to do everyday as my
career.
inspiration
why this job?| It sounds cliche - but it's true, the whole making
a difference thing. Whether I am working with a client one on one or
teaching a big group, I can see how their mood gets uplifted and stress
relieved, all within an hour. By the time they are done with their
workout they are like a different person. They look relaxed, proud and
confident. Seeing that is what is inspiring to me. It's an
indescribable feeling to be able to be part of that transformation in
someone's life everyday.
love
why I love this job!| I love the variety of things I get to do, I
am never bored at work and I get to walk the talk. I talk about living a
healthy lifestyle and my job and personal life encompasses all that.
work
my typical day| For example today at 6:30am I was here at the
club teaching a group cycling class. Then I am in my office working on
marketing materials for some new programs we are offering. I also work
with all the trainers to make sure they understand what the new programs
are all about so they are prepared to discuss the new offerings with
their clients and members. Later on I have an interview with a potential
instructor and then I'm off to work with a personal training client.
Then, I come back to my office for more administrative work and then I
may teach a class that night as well. I typically get home at around
7-7:30 pm.
challenges
what they are | Long days, I typically work long days so keeping
your energy up all day can be a challenge. Also, in this line of work,
your clients come to feel better and relieve stress so you have to be
upbeat even if you've had the worse day yourself. You need to stay
strong and positive for your clients. Another factor to consider is that
your income can be unpredictable if you mostly work off commission.
Fortunately, my current position is salaried and I can train during my
off hours to make additional income. You definitely can make a living or
career in this industry but unless you are a celebrity trainer you
aren't going to be super rich; but you see how people get transformed
and that is very rewarding.
upside
all about growth | There is definitely a demand for it. The
health and fitness industry is growing, baby boomer generation are
looking to slow down their aging process and obesity is on the rise, so
there are lots of opportunities for growth in this industry.
