beginnings
how I got started | After five hard years of studying and
understanding Chinese medicine, I worked in a hospital in China to gain
experience directly after graduation. Since I wanted to have my own
practice in California, I had to transfer my school credits to a company
of evaluators that my school referred me to. This was to see if I was
qualified to work in the United States. Then, I had to send a letter to
the Acupuncture State Board in the US in order to obtain my permit to
allow me to examine patients. The wait took a couple of months for the
results.
inspiration
why this job?| It was a family decision for me to become a
doctor, but it was my choice to go into traditional Chinese medicine.
Even though it is a part of my culture, I am more interested in Eastern
medicine than Western medicine because I feel like it is more
traditional and it has more potential to work better and help others.
Acupuncture is just one form of Chinese medicine and I became an
acupuncturist because other practices of Chinese medicine in California
has not been approved yet.
love
why I love this job!| I like doing what I do because of the
positive feedback that I receive from my patients after reliving them
from their pain. Depending on the patient and their treatment, some of
the feedback is immediate where others may take longer to see any
effects. No matter the duration of time, I find it to be very rewarding
to help others and make them feel comfortable with Chinese medicine.
From all of this, it builds up more confidence in myself and the work I
do.
work
my typical day| My day starts when the clinic is opened at 10A.M.
Patients come in throughout the day. I follow up with them and see how
their conditions are from the last treatment and I give them their
treatments depending on their needs. Treatment sessions usually last
about an hour long. If it is their first time visiting, I go through a
15 minute consultation with them to try to understand what their
concerns are and what they want me help them with. The number of needles
I use depend on the person and their treatment. I also issue herbal
medicines if necessary. After the session, I make an appointment to see
them the following week to continue the treatment because acupuncture is
effective when it is a continuous process. Also, I follow up with
patients who stop their treatments and find out the reason for that. I
see about 10-15 patients a day.
challenges
what they are | The most challenging part is trying to figure out
the best medical treatment for each patient because each person is
different and some treatments for each person may longer than others. If
it isn't effective, then I have to be flexible to change it and try
another route. Another challenge is trying to have people become
comfortable and trusting to Chinese medicine. It is difficult to
communicate with patients and have them understand acupuncture, how it
works, and why it does not take in effective instantly. That is why
people use Western medicine because they notice the effect right away,
but it is only good for a couple of hours and the problem will return.
Most people will use acupuncture as a last resort to ease their pain and
I hope that they can see the effectiveness after one try so they can
continue with the treatments.
upside
all about growth | I am working for the owner of the clinic I am
in now. There are many acupuncture branches within this area but I am
one of the few doctors that is working at this location. From this, I
hope to use my experiences to open my own clinic one day.
