beginnings
how I got started | I always knew I wanted to work with children
in their natural environment where I could observe them in their daily
life with parents, teachers, and peers. That's why I decided to work in
schools. There, I discovered a growing number of grossly misunderstood
students who were being misdiagnosed and overmedicated. They weren't
getting better with our interventions, but worse. Once I learned about
how trauma changes the brain, I knew how to intervene differently and
soon saw excellent results. I began sharing the students' successes with
others and the book began to write itself. Parents and educators alike
urged me to continue to share this information in a big way.

well as my reverence for where we can all go in our lives, when we
courageously heal our own trauma.

why I love this job!| Seeing people understood and helped in a way they never were before.
work
my typical day| Wake up with my son and have quality time with
him. Teach a class at the university. Go to the gym. Work from my home
office preparing for a school district training, or parent education
seminar. See clients in my private practice. More quality time with my
son.
challenges
what they are | Travel can be challenging and being away from my son.
upside
all about growth | It is the most rewarding career because of the
possibilities for growth, expansion, doing new and different things at
every turn, getting to wear so many different hats. There is a high
demand for the best in any career. This one is no different. It's about
being innovative and open to new developments and becoming the best at
what is most effective. There is a ladder to climb as far as education
and staying on top of the research as well as your own personal
development.
