Title: Hospital CEO
Profession: Medical and Health
I am the chief executive officer of MountainView Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada.
EDUCATION | Master's degree in health administration from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and a Bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Oregon. I am also a Fellow and with the American College of Healthcare Executives.
HOW TO GET STARTED | Consider this career if you have thick skin, a creative mind, and a passion for helping others by making things better.
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Compassionate, leader, versatile, ability to balance strategic vision and daily operations, honest and ethical, competitive, financial and operational acumen.
beginnings
how I got started | I worked as an Emergency Department Registration Clerk at Routt Memorial Hospital in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I enjoyed the great environment, the people, and how everyone shared a common purpose of taking care of the community. People wanted to be there and it made me want to be a part of it.

inspiration
why this job?| Simply, I like that we are here to make a difference in people's lives. We share their experiences. Whether it's the birth of a child, putting them back together after an emergency or being with them as they cope with the aging process, we get to wear our hearts on our sleeves and connect with people who will remember us for the rest of our lives.

love
why I love this job!| I like that every day we have the opportunity to make an impression on the people we help. My job is to work with our team to make sure it's a positive one. I like the complexity of each challenge. I like that we get to create programs and needed services by inspiring a team of dedicated caregivers to work towards a shared vision. I like that when we help our patients, they tell their family and friends about their experience and the difference MountainView Hospital made for them. In addition to supporting the hospital, I also have the opportunity to help others through involvement in community organizations, such as the Goodwill Community Advisory Board, Nevada Hospital Association and Las Vegas Tech Center.

work
my typical day| A typical day for me includes meeting with physicians, the management team and our employees. We spend a lot of time looking for ways to improve our hospital, meet our goals and solve any problems. I also try to break away from these meetings as much as possible to go on rounds to see patients to remind myself why we do what we do.

challenges
what they are | Leadership is dependent on sharing a vision and gaining buy-in from the team. In today's environment, so many people are trying to get different things from the organization. You need to be able to balance the need to treat everyone equitably while finding an individual connection that makes them feel they are committed to our organization.

upside
all about growth | Careers in healthcare are always in demand, whether that means becoming a CEO, nurse, physician, respiratory therapist or social worker. Hospital CEOs start in all different places. Some have degrees in hospital administration, while others have started their careers as a direct patient caregiver. Whatever route you take, use the experience to learn something about healthcare and the ultimate goal of working for the patient.
