Aimee Huber
Title: Non-Profit Director
Profession: Non Profit Professional
I lead a group of pregnancy resource centers. We provide support, education, resources and medical services to women who are experiencing, or at risk for, an unplanned pregnancy.
EDUCATION | BA in Political Science, Rutgers University
HOW TO GET STARTED | The best thing to do is to volunteer and go from there. While it's very rewarding, it's also challenging and it's good to "count the cost."
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Administratively-oriented, the ability to communicate verbally and in written form, pro-active, relational, persevering.
beginnings
how I got started | My dad was the one who most influenced my career choice. Through him I developed a heart for women who were struggling with an unplanned pregnancy. I realized that many of them are not informed about all of their options--they often think that abortion is their only choice. I found out that First Choice helps women in this vulnerable position so I started to volunteer on Monday nights. When the director announced that she was pregnant and would be leaving to be a stay-at-home mom, I casually mentioned to her that I would love to do what she did. One thing led to another. I started part-time while I was in college and went full-time when I graduated.

inspiration
why this job?| It was a way to make a difference and to carry out my convictions. Also, it fit my gifts and abilities.

love
why I love this job!| I love seeing life change in the women who come into our centers. I love knowing that a baby was born because we were here. I love working with the women who work here and I love the variety in my position. There is never a dull moment and that energizes me!

work
my typical day| Every day is different. Sometimes there are administrative tasks to do, other days it's preparing for a fundraising event. I could also complete a grant proposal to a foundation, counsel a staff member, speak in a public setting, or ask one of our donors for support.

challenges
what they are | Seeing clients make decisions that will harm them later in life, staff transitions, and financial shortfalls.

upside
all about growth | There is certainly a need for pregnancy center leaders but since it's non-profit work, it's not financially lucrative. You're really a servant leader.
