Lucien Renjillian-Burgy
Title: Massage Therapist
Profession: Skilled Professionals
I help people relax, heal and feel great again. I work with chronic tension and stress, sports and repetitive motion injuries, and people using massage as part of their healing, self-awareness and wellness program.
EDUCATION | Bachelor of Arts; History from Boston College, plus about 1000 hours of massage training in various modalities.
HOW TO GET STARTED | Know yourself well. Some of the most important skills I have as a therapist have to do with an intimate knowledge of how my own body and mind work. Self-awareness has helped me more than anything else in a profession working directly with people and their physical issues.
MUST HAVE TRAITS | Neutrality, self-awareness, body mechanics, improvisation, listening, and impeccable boundaries.
beginnings
how I got started | I was laid off from my internet start-up job in San Francisco and looking to change careers. I was interested in my own healing and starting my own business. Massage Therapy seemed like a great choice given my background in athletics and my interest in healing, so when I fell in love and moved to Maui, Hawaii I had an opportunity to go to massage school in paradise and I did it.

inspiration
why this job?| I was inspired by the opportunity to work directly with people, in a physical and healing way, and to get out of the 9-5 grind. I value a high quality of life, and to me that means working at my own pace, less than 10-15 hours a week. I wanted a job that I could love and that would give me an amazing life.

love
why I love this job!| I love having my own business where I create my own world, set my own schedule and take ownership of all my successes (and failures). I love working with people and being involved in small miracles on a daily basis. And I love solving problems in a non-linear way that gives people relief from pain and suffering.

work
my typical day| I work 3 days a week in my own office. Most work days I get up without an alarm, bike or walk to my office about 30 minutes before my first client, and then do some minor set up and personal preparation. I love creating a relaxing and welcoming environment free from stress that my clients then walk into and feel invited to let down. I see anywhere from 1-4 clients per day, working individually with each person on their unique issues and presenting complaints. I almost always leave feeling inspired and in awe of what transpires during a session.

challenges
what they are | Learning to deal with the financial ups and downs of running your own business. Cultivating “hard” business skills in a healing profession. Giving just the right amount of care, skill and attention to the client without giving too much or too little of yourself.

upside
all about growth | Massage Therapy is a rapidly growing and now widely accepted part of the average person's wellness regimen. As the cost of health care goes up and the satisfaction with the health care system goes down, alternative therapies are growing in popularity. Truth is, there aren't many people who DON'T want a massage! Massage is here to stay.
