Think you'd have to sell your soul to make six figures? Think again. We've uncovered several jobs across different industries that provide a high degree of job satisfaction and a high salary, proving that a solid work history can be just as valuable as an MD or an MBA. If you're looking for challenging and meaningful work with a nice paycheck attached, then consider these five jobs:
1. Environmental engineer. Green-collar jobs are a fast-growing career niche, and demand for environmental engineers is expected to grow even more over the next several years as businesses, builders, and individuals become more eco-conscious. Most positions require an engineering degree paired with excellent problem solving skills and an understanding of regulatory compliance. Salary.com lists a mid-range from $112,241 to $137,251 for Environmental, Health, and Safety Engineering Managers.
2. Chief Enrollment Management Officer. Colleges and universities hire CEMOs to enlarge their applicant pools, improve retention rates, and increase demographic diversity. The position calls for strategic thinking and strong interpersonal skills as well as an understanding of data analysis and marketing concepts, so it's the type of job that is ideal for someone with a strong business or marketing background who wants to transition into higher education. According to Salary.com, mid-range CEMOs earn between $87.036 and 132,034, but salaries can stretch beyond $150,000 at larger universities. School superintendents, college deans, and other top administrative positions in education can also bring in a six figure salary depending on the area.
3. Director of Corporate Giving. Serving as the conduit between a non-profit organization and the business community, the Director of Corporate Giving manages relationships with corporate sponsors and creates opportunities for businesses to partner with the organization. Often this position is held by someone with extensive experience in non-profit fundraising or with a business background and the desire to support the organization's mission. Key skills include the ability to think strategically, communicate clearly, and manage a budget. Salary.com shows an average salary range between $110,811 and $191,656 for the middle 25-50% in this position.
4. Lobbyist. Lobbyists research and analyze legislation, attend congressional hearings, and advocate for the interests of a group or individual. Though some lobbyists defend the tobacco industry or other controversial groups, lobbyists can also represent a broad range of other issues and interests including environmental groups, schools, senior citizens organizations, and non-profits to ensure that those perspectives are heard by legislators. According to the American League of Lobbyists (ALL), there are no minimum educational requirements to become a lobbyist, but most lobbyists have a college degree. Some also hold a law degree because understanding legal issues is an important part of the job. Salary.com lists the mid salary range between $76,755 and $131,518. However, salaries for the highest paid senior lobbyists can reach above $150,000.
5. Director of Human Resources. From non-profit to multi-national corporation and everything in between, Directors of HR are needed across many different industries. The job includes recruiting and interviewing job applicants, planning and implementing employee retention programs, overseeing policies regarding hiring and, in some cases, compensation. Interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly are paramount. According to Salary.com the average salary falls between $100,872 and $136,688, but autonomous Directors of HR earn even more.
NOTE: all salary ranges accurate as of December, 2008.
